Chronic Renal Failure in Dogs and Cats

http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/ClientED/anatomy/dog_ug.asp#Kidney

Chronic renal failure (CRF) in dogs and cats is the deterioration of renal function to the point where the kidney is no longer able to perform its primary functions. The kidney’s primary functions are to filter metabolic wastes from the bloodstream and excrete them into the urine; perform hemostatic functions such as control red blood cell production, blood pressure; and to perform endocrine functions such as in the degradation of hormones. Additionally, the kidney plays a primary role in the synthesizing of active vitamin D.

Chronic renal failure is a process that occurs over a period of time, longer than a month, and is primarily due to the presence of renal disease. Renal disease often goes undetected in most patients for extended periods of time. Renal disease is usually not discovered until the damage to the kidneys has caused irreversible renal failure to occur.

The causes of chronic renal failure can be due to many factors. Renal failure caused by injury is not as common as congenital and hereditary conditions. However, other metabolic factors that can cause kidney disease other than these are much more commonly found.

Dogs and cats are susceptible to a great variety of poisons that can cause renal failure. Additionally, diseases such as leptospirosis, cancer, amyloidosis, pyelonephritis, glomerulonephritis, immune-complex disorders, ischemia, hypercalcemia and many others are the more common causes of chronic renal failure in pets today.

Dental disease is a primary factor in kidney disease. The bacterium that develops from advanced dental disease enters the blood stream. These bacteria can settle in multiple organs and damage the kidneys, heart, and liver of dogs and cats.

Age also plays a role in kidney failure. As the pet ages so do the organs that function within the body. Large clusters of proteins are harder for the kidney to process at an older age. These proteins can contribute to renal damage. This is one important reason why special diets are recommended for the senior pet.

The most common clinical presentation of the dog and cat with CRF is dehydration, anorexia and weight loss; but many other symptoms can be exhibited such as diarrhea or constipation and anemia. Neurological impairment is seen clinically in the advanced cases of CRF. It must be noted that these symptoms can be indicative of other disease processes; thus requiring laboratory testing and other diagnostic procedures as the primary methods of the clinical evaluation of CRF.

The progression of CRF is a sequence of events involving the key component of the kidney anatomy. The kidney is most easily described as a primary filtering mechanism of the body. The primary functioning component of the kidney is the nephron. In fact, the number of nephrons that are present in the kidney usually determines kidney size.

The nephron itself is made of several components. The main components of the nephron are the renal corpuscle, proximal tubule, loop of Henle, distal tubule and collecting duct. Each one of these components has additional individual structures within them. When the nephron is damaged it ceases to perform its filtering functions. This leaves the remaining functioning nephrons to carry the burden of filtering the blood that is flowing through the kidney.

After a period of time the disease may continue to damage other nephrons. If it is a congenital or hereditary condition, more than likely the normal nephrons were forced to work under a heavier than normal work load due to the lack of normal kidney cells. This heavy work load can cause additional damage to the kidneys. It must be noted that many animals that have a hereditary or congenital kidney disease usually do not live past one year of age.

More and more nephrons are destroyed as the kidney disease progresses. This destruction of nephrons usually results in the reduction in kidney size also. Even if the kidney disease has been treated sometimes the destruction of the nephrons will continue unchecked. Most clinical signs of CRF usually do not develop until after 70% of the normal kidney function is destroyed. This is why routine laboratory screening tests are vital to the health and well-being of the pet.

The process of chronic renal failure in the dog and cat can be quite complicated, involves many physiological processes, and can be caused by multiple conditions and diseases. While CRF can be managed successfully for a period of time it will eventually result in the death of the patient. However, it must be noted that cats are more responsive to extended periods of CRF management than dogs. The veterinarian in charge of the pet’s care will be able to develop the treatment plan that would be the most beneficial for each individual.

Pet owners can have their dogs and cats teeth cleaned on an annual basis which will help prevent many cases of chronic renal failure. This is probably the single most important thing that a pet owner can do to help prevent kidney disease. Regular bi-annual health checks with a veterinarian that includes laboratory blood testing and urinalysis are additional preventative measures that pet owners can take to help prevent chronic renal failure. At the very least, diagnostic tools will provide early diagnosis that can assist the veterinarian in the management of CRF. Additionally, feeding dogs and cats with a good quality food for the proper stages of its life is an important factor in disease prevention.

With the advances in veterinary medicine, more information on chronic renal failure is being discovered, resulting in the availability of more and better treatments. Kidney transplant procedures in the feline and canine patient are becoming more successful every year. While this method of treatment was first developed successfully in the cat, researchers are now getting favorable results in the canine patient. Currently, there is not a cure for chronic renal disease.

Stepping Out...

I spent the morning working on my paper.

It has come to the point that I think I'm going to have to quit "fine tuning" it.

I did something today that I have never done in my entire life.

I am really a homebody type of person and I'm not given to walking up to complete strangers and introducing myself.

Working on a tip that was provided by Shelly, I decided that I would go and *cover* a story this afternoon.

Armed with my pen, notepad, and camera, I drove off into the rain this afternoon seeking to get the ~scoop~ on my story.

I swallowed the lump in my throat and walked into the building full of strangers, looking for a familiar face.

I have to tell you that walking up to complete strangers and asking them questions is not my strong suit.

I got to meet Shelly in person.

It kind of surprised her!

When I got home with the "goods", I had a lot of fun pulling the pictures together and writing the story.

The picture is of Shelly's dog, "Bonnie", and the little boy is Nate who road in her wagon.

Shelly said that she took a lot of pictures, so she will probably post a lot of them on her blog.

I want to tell Shelly "thank you" for being such a kind and friendly person.

Because if it hadn't of been for us already meeting each other through our blogging, I would never had the courage to do such a thing.

I think I will do something like this again in the near future.

A Plan for Saturday...

The kids and I went to see a movie at the dollar theatre tonight. It actually costs $1.50 a person now, but it used to be a dollar.

We saw Madea's Family Reunion. While it has received some tough (and on some points deserved) criticism, I was thoroughly entertained. And so were the kids.

Now I need to see the first movie, Diary of a Mad Black Woman that Tyler Perry also wrote, produced, and acted in. I'll probably enjoy it too.

While we were driving back we were caught in a really heavy downpour. I had to pull over on the side of the road and wait for it to subside. There was some minor street flooding, but it wasn't too bad.

We really need the rain.

So Saturday promises to not be so nice weather wise. That's ok by me because I have a paper to finish up and a final to take next week.

For those of you who are local, and are looking for an indoor event you could go to Wilson Elementary School between 1 and 3p.m.

Shelly has decorated a wagon for the little ones and her dog Bonnie will provide rides for them! Their little carnival is for a good cause too.

My girl scout troop and several other troops are having a carnival to raise money to help rebuild two girl scout camps that were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

Shelly has all the details on her blog. It should be a lot of fun.

You guys have a great Saturday.

It Ended Up Being a Nice Little Evening...

We're expecting rain.

Yee-Ha!

So I got home from work and mowed my dirt, I mean grass.

After this rain my dirt, I mean grass, will probably look like a zebra.

I had Parker following behind me with the fertilizer spreader.

It's a drop spreader and I explained to him how it had to be put down "just so".

I tell him this every spring and fall when I ask him to help me with the fertilizing.

Well, while I was mowing I would look behind me to check on him. And whenever I was facing him I would check on his progress. I could see that he wasn't concentrating on the task quite like I would have wanted him to.

So, I expect that after the rain, in about a week, I should have some interesting stripe patterns across my yard.

We'll see.

It will certainly be something to look forward to.

Carrie cleaned out a section of guttering for me that always fills up with the pecan and oak tree cattails.

There are still a lot of cattails in the trees. Surely they'll be finished falling in the next week or so.

Work called me shortly after we had finished.

They needed me to come in.

Carrie and Parker went down the street to stay at our friend's house.

When I got home I called and told them that I was *back*.

Well, they were fixing to eat dinner and asked me to come over and eat with them.

I was tired and didn't have any "argument" left in me.

So our friends fed my whole family this evening.

It was a very nice dinner with really good company.

A perfect end to my day.

Now it's time for bed.

I will go to sleep dreaming about the rain that is to begin forming over our heads.

I hope that I wake up to the sound of rain drops in the morning.

Something That I Would Like...

I don't talk too much about things that I would like to have...

or things that I want.

I spend most of my time providing for others.

There are little things that I do, that are for myself.

Things that are mine.

But something that I would like will stay a secret for a while...

At least until they are grown and gone.

There is something that I would like, right now.

But it can wait...

for a while.

What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others and the world remains and is immortal. ~ Albert Pine

Local Television News Story...

The local television station came by our hospital yesterday evening and did a story about storms and pets.

The veterinarian is one of our doctors, Brett Boatsman.

The pet owner is one of our long time clients, Shirley Swaim.

(I'm doing an ultrasound on one of her cats tomorrow.)

It's a cute story called "Pets Credited for Severe Weather Warnings".

Planning Ahead...

I have made a couple of updates to the post concerning Colt Levi Clark.

He's still missing. It has been five days now.

I heard something interesting on the news this evening. The story was about glyconutrients and how there seems to be some local children/patients whose parents are giving them these supplements.

Some of these children weren't expected to live and today, they are not only living but they are thriving.

The reporter states that there isn't much information available about glyconutrients. She did interview a doctor in Oklahoma City who is supposed to be one of the few specialists in this field in the entire country.

He stated that there haven't been any studies to prove, or disprove, that glyconutrients will help the body's immune system in such a dramatic way.

And I haven't taken the time to really look for any credible information either.

While I believe that such a supplement could possibly do such things, it just makes me wonder why it would work.

Wouldn't it be because there was a deficiency to begin with?

Maybe McDonald's isn't such a good place to eat after all.

Parker came home from his friend's house this evening with a "tall tale" about a Bigfoot sighting at some Girl Scout Camp here in Oklahoma a few years back.

He was asking if we could go camping there and hunt for it.

I'm too tired to think about planning such a camping trip right now.

Well...

Maybe we 'could' go.

I've been thinking about a camping trip here the last couple of week-ends.

I think I would want to tank up on some glyconutrients before we embarked on such an endeavor.

I wonder if a McDonald's Big Mac would make good bait for a Bigfoot trap?

Oklahoma Spring Time Weather...

We haven't had much 'regular' spring-like weather here lately.

These last couple of weeks has had many days 20 degrees above normal with temperatures in the low 90's and high 80's. The southern part of the state has already hit 100 degrees. That usually doesn't happen until July or August.

Gee whiz.

We're still in the middle of a drought and haven't had any "drought-breaking" rains either.

Usually, we have a lot of very active storms around here in the spring, but not this year.

This evening there were several small tornadoes that formed and hit the ground. They were mostly in open country so not too much was damaged and nobody was hurt.

One municipal airport had a lot of damage along with some of the airplanes.

We got to see two of the tornadoes here from the house this evening.

They were *due west* of us.

First, one was on the ground ,and then a second one formed and was touching the ground also. For a short while they were both transversing across the countryside simultaneously.

I'm not sure how many touched down around here, but it seems like there were about six or so according to the news.

Of course, we all started praying this evening that they would not come at us.

Wm H threw a prayer in for us too. *Thanks*

The storms looked like they were gaining strength and the lightening was intensifying. And then, all of sudden, the storms started to weaken.

Leaving the hailstones in the heavens and letting the much needed moisture fall to earth.

There are a few power outages and downed lines... a few things tore up.

But it wasn't "bad".

Nothing like we've had in the past.

The tornado on May 3, 1999, was one of the biggest in history.

A category F-5.

The storm traveled almost 100 miles through 11 counties.

It killed a lot of people too.

And a dear sweet lady that I knew.

You have to be below ground to survive a tornado of this size.

Like in a cellar.

If you would like to see videos of tornadoes, specifically the May 3rd tornado, you can go here.

But you have to remember, this monster was a once in a lifetime occurrence.

Tornadoes aren't usually this big, or stay on the ground this long.

But that doesn't mean they can't tear things up or kill people when they're small.

Weather has always been very interesting to me.

And I really enjoy watching it.

later...

Tornadoes Tonight...

Tornado sirens have been going off here the last hour or so. With the wind as still as it is, we could hear El Reno's tornado sirens from our front yard.

Then we heard the Yukon sirens go off.

We have already seen two tornadoes in the distance this evening.

We tried to get some pictures of them, but to no avail. My camera just isn't good enough for those kind of shots.

*sigh*

Several tornadoes are forming and heading towards us.

My neighbor Sue has an open door policy at her house during weather like this.

If a tornado is going to get close to the house here, we'll just scurry across the street to her house and run down to her cellar.

Thanks Sue.

My other neighbors have gathered their kids and dogs and headed to an elderly neighbor who lives behind them.

She isn't able to get down into her cellar by herself, so they go and help her and stay until the storm passes.

Well...

The lightening is intensifying so I had better shut this computer down.

There's been a lot of hail with these storms and I am praying that none of that hits us here.

I want the rain though.

Whoa!!

That was a good one.

Gotta go.

The Shadow of Humanity...

Today is almost gone.

After reading all of my blogging friends posts I could see an outreach of humanity.

Colorful, kinetic, and ever changing.

Each within their sphere...

touching, moving, bringing color and life to their worlds.

Sharing.

Reaching out to those they have never seen.

Kind-hearted, friendly, jovial, and caring.

Providing a resting spot.

A cool shade for those who need it.

A cool and forgiving shadow of humanity covering our blemishes...

our weaknesses...

Welcome relief from a harsh and unforgiving glare.

Offering strength and hope.

A canopy of filtered sunshine...

a patchwork of light at our feet.

Reaching outward.

Moving silently...

in rhythm with the slightest whisper of a wind...

The shadow of humanity...

The outline of God's hand outstretched.

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."

Druthers...

Today was a very nice and warm day...

I think.

I spent the entire day working on my schoolwork. I have another rather large paper that is due.

I have been working on the research for the past couple of weeks... kind of.

Okay, okay...

So I have cheated the last couple of week-ends, but only by a little bit!

I went to the nursery last week-end and, well...

the week-end before that.

It's at this time of year that I suffer from a horrible case of spring fever.

...and nurseries seem like Heaven on earth to me.

I'd druther be digging in my flower bed, or mowing my grass, than sitting here typing on a long researched paper.

Thank goodness I've finished reading that book, or my condition would be unbearable!

*sigh*

The ten o'clock news' weatherman had a good account of the day.

It was almost like being there.

Bladder Stones in the Canine Patient...

Our doctors surgically remove a lot of bladder stones at work. Usually these uroliths are small and a lot of the time there are quite a few of them.

Today we had two different patients in for surgery that had really large bladder stones.

In fact, these stones were enormous.

The first couple of pictures are of two stones that were formed in a medium sized female labrador mix. The tear drop shaped stone was sitting in the bottom of the bladder and was shaped, in part, by the neck of the bladder. A second stone formed on top of the first, forming a cap of sorts.

This was such an unusual formation that I just had to get a picture of it.

The stone was washed and dried. It isn't sparkling from moisture, but from the crystals that formed it.

The second dog was a female German Shepherd. This is the picture of her bladder. The stone is still inside.

Dog owners bring their pets in when they discover blood in the urine. A lot of the time, the hematuria isn't noticed because most pets go outside in the back yard and the owners don't see the urine. This is usually why uroliths can get so large before they are discovered.

Most of the time a pet with hematuria is only noticed if the pet has an accident indoors, or if the owner happens to be with the pet when it urinates and sees the red-tinged urine.Bladder stones can be formed by several different types of crystals.

And there are many reasons why crystals can occur in the urine.

One factor is that there are some breeds of dogs that have a tendency to form more stones than others. Some of the more common breeds of dogs that have a tendency to form bladder stones are:

Miniature Schnauzers
Miniature Poodles
Dachshunds
Shihtzues
Cocker Spaniels
Dalmatians
English Bulldogs

However, any breed of dog can form bladder stones.

There are also certain foods and minerals that help to precipitate crystal formation in the urine. By the same token, there are special diets that have been developed that help to "dissolve" certain types of small stones in the bladder.

A proper pH will help to prevent most stones.

But when you are dealing with stones of this size, there is no alternative other than surgery.

At our hospital we recommend that all pets have a urinalysis every six months. That way we can monitor the pH of the urine as well as check the sediment microscopically for any signs of bacteria, crystals, or other abnormalities.

A urinalysis can also help us watch for certain physiological conditions.

A small little test twice a year can really help prevent a larger problem from occuring...

And Then We Cried...

Tomorrow is the anniversary of the Oklahoma City Alfred P. Murrah Building bombing.

After the events of this past week with Jamie Rose Bolin, emotions are easily brought to the surface.

There were 168 people killed. 19 of them were children.

30 children were orphaned and 219 children lost at least one parent.

I was at home at 9:02 A.M. on April 19, 1995. I was homeschooling at the time and living outside of Guthrie, Oklahoma. We were a good 50 miles away from downtown Oklahoma City.

We heard a muffled boom, then the house shook slightly and the windows rattled.

Thinking that it was some form of distant thunder, perhaps a sonic boom(?), I looked outside to see bright blue skies.

I then turned on the television...

and the horrifying story began to unfold before our very eyes.

First there is shock and disbelief...

Then there is action...

Followed by emotional and physical exhaustion...

And then we cried.

Thank you to the 12,384 volunteers and rescue workers.

Especially to Rebecca Anderson who died rescuing survivors from the rubble.

The photograph was awarded a Pulitzer Prize and was taken by Charles H. Porter, IV.

Is There Healing?

The family of Jamie Rose Bolin is now left with a daunting task.

How do they pick up their lives and move forward?

How do they overcome this life-changing tragedy?

Jamie's friends are faced with an emotional trauma and painful memory also.

How will those children overcome the emotions that are associated with her violent death?

The peacefulness of the neighborhoods of Purcell, Oklahoma, has been shattered.

Will they regain what they have lost?

The family of Kevin Ray Underwood has been dealt a heavy blow also.

What has he done to his family?

Will these people be able to heal from these traumatic wounds?

Does the pain ever subside and do the wounds ever close?

Shelly had a childhood friend whose life was taken by violence.

A young and vibrant voice that had been silenced at a very young age.

Her name was Michelle.

Now Michelle has a voice.

Shelly has created a new website called Justice of the Dawn.

She states on her blog,
"After a discussion I was having over on TJ's site, I decided to create a webpresence for the child victims of violence."

Shelly has done a lot of work in 24 hours to pull this website together.

Justice of the Dawn is a webpresence created solely to tell the story and be the voice of the child victims of violence. It was born out of my own need to tell the story of my childhood best friend, Dawn Michelle Stanley.

After 25 years...

Wounds are still healing.

God Bless you Shelly.

Amber Alert Criteria...

Jamie Rose Bolin's horrific death has overshadowed this Easter week-end.

I wanted some answers to a few questions about the Amber Alert criteria.

I found what I was looking for on the U.S. Department of Justice's Amber Alert "Frequently Asked Questions" page.

What are the criteria for issuing AMBER Alerts?

Each state AMBER Alert plan has its own criteria for issuing AMBER Alerts. The PROTECT Act, passed in 2003, which established the role of AMBER Alert Coordinator within the Department of Justice, calls for the Department of Justice to issue minimum standards or guidelines for AMBER Alerts that states can adopt voluntarily. The Department's Guidance on Criteria for Issuing AMBER Alerts follows:

-Law enforcement must confirm that an abduction has taken place

-The child is at risk of serious injury or death

-There is sufficient descriptive information of child, captor or captor's vehicle to issue an Alert

-The child must be 17-years-old or younger

-It is recommended that immediate entry of AMBER Alert data be entered into the FBI's National Crime Information Center. Text information describing the circumstances surrounding the abduction of the child should be entered, and the case flagged as Child Abduction.

Most state's guidelines adhere closely to the DOJ's recommended guidelines.

Can AMBER Alerts be issued across state and jurisdictional lines?

Absolutely. Many states have formal memorandums of understanding with other states and there are currently 27 regional plans. If law enforcement has reason to believe that the child has been taken across state lines, the AMBER state coordinator will ask that state to issue an alert. This happened when a boy from a Chicago suburb was abducted. Law enforcement had reason to believe the child was in Indiana and then taken to California. In both instances Indiana and California issued an alert at Illinois= request. The child was recovered in California. Many states have informal agreements with other states to issue AMBER Alerts upon request.

Are AMBER Alerts issued for all missing children?

AMBER Alerts are issued for abducted children when the situation meets the AMBER Alert criteria. Some children wander away in a crowded grocery store, others might run off after a heated argument. When a child is missing, law enforcement can act swiftly to help recover the child, by developing search and rescue teams or by bringing dogs to the scene to track the scent for example. AMBER Alert is only one tool that law enforcement can use to find abducted children. AMBER Alerts should be reserved for those cases that meet the AMBER criteria. Overuse of AMBER Alert could result in the public becoming desensitized to Alerts when they are issued.

Here is the "Guidance for Criteria for Issuing AMBER Alerts" from the National AMBER Alert Coordinator.

Shelly posted a poignant comment:

"When I was ten years old, my best friend's name was Dawn Michelle Stanley. She disappeared and was missing for 2 weeks. The town (Lubbock, TX) searched feverishly only to have her turn up wrapped in blankets but otherwise naked in a crawlspace under her house where her attacker (her mother's boyfriend) left her after he raped and then strangled her.

...My question is: who speaks for Michelle? No one, as far as I can tell, besides me and possibly her mother and sister even seem to remember this beautiful, amazing person...

Who does speak for Michelle...

and the countless other children who have horrific and tragic ends to their young lives.

I can only hope that I do.

Albeit, in some small way.

Still Asking Questions...

Still Asking Questions...

Could the premeditated and tragic murder of 10 year old Jamie Rose Bolin of Purcell, Oklahoma, have been prevented? If the Amber Alert had been issued 24 hours earlier would she still be alive today?

According to the press release on April 15, 2006, the medical examiner believes that she was killed the day that she disappeared. After her disappearance, for how long was Jamie alive before Underwood tortured and killed her?

When Jamie first disappeared on Wednesday, April 12th, it was believed that she was a runaway. It wasn’t until after a friend of Jamie’s had come forward, 26 hours after her disappearance, that an Amber Alert was issued. The details given by the friend was considered as “very credible” and pointed the investigation towards an online predator. But Kevin Ray Underwood was a predator who was posing as a neighbor in the Purcell Parks Apartment complex where Jamie and her father both lived.

Just one day before on April 11th, in Independence, Kansas, an Amber Alert had been issued for a missing teenager, Kelsey Lynn Stelting. Stelting, who had called 911 on her cell phone, insisted that she had been kidnapped by gunpoint. The local authorities, FBI, and the community started combing the countryside and posting flyers in hopes to find the teenager before it was too late. Fifteen hours later she was found safe; a perpetrator of a hoax.

Some criticized the state of Oklahoma for not immediately releasing an Amber Alert for Kelsey Stelting. While an Amber Alert for Stelting was an exercise in futility, shouldn’t the state of Oklahoma have issued the alert, in cooperation with Kansas, as soon as possible anyway?

Could this irresponsible Kansas teenager’s actions have made the local and state authorities in Oklahoma hesitant to issue an alert for Purcell’s little 10 year old Jamie Rose Bolin?

While there is a very large cost in man hours and local resources to search for a missing child, should we be counting our pennies? Even if there is a possibility that it could be a hoax?

The Bank of Oklahoma is accepting donations for the Bolin family. Your contribution can be dropped off at any Bank of Oklahoma branch.

The FBI has released information and a picture of Elizabeth M. Thomsen. She is listed as a Missing Person with the agency. The FBI believes that Elizabeth is with Lewis J. Lee.

On a Lighter Note...

I have been tagged by
Stolen Moments.

And... I have been caught red-handed commenting at 'another'
blog while the two of us were playing hooky on this tag thing...

However, I do believe that I provided enough excuses for the both of us.

Ok... So here goes.

Six Degrees of Weirdness

1. Reveal 6 weird facts/things/habits about yourself and then tag 6 people.

2. Leave a "You're tagged" comment to let people know you have tagged them. They must reveal 6 things (or the entire blogosphere will explode and it will be all their fault)

3. Leave me a comment letting me know you have completed your mission (should you choose to accept it)

#1. I can get so involved in a project that I can totally "shut the world out". I also will forget to eat. I suddenly start to feel "not-so-good" and then realize that it is because I have not eaten anything. I think that it's weird to not remember to eat. Especially since I really do like to eat *large quantities* of tasty food.

#2. I pay attention to weird details and things that most people don't notice, see, or even care about. I will see designs and patterns in walls, pavement, nature, people... I will notice things like that and then stare at it. I know. It's weird. But I also find lots of spare change this way.

#3. I will eat almost anything. While I haven't been exposed to a lot of exotic places or foods, I am just not a very picky eater and I will try anything once. There are three things though that I really don't care for: liver, lima beans, and hominy/grits. I have wondered if it is because I lack a bit of cultural 'taste' or if my taste buds just don't work well.

#4. I repeat myself a lot. I will say something to someone and then... say it again. It can really drive me nuts. Why do I do that? It's just crazy. I have no clue why I repeat myself. Unless... it is from raising over 40 kids, and well... you can probably figure out the rest.

#5. I love blood and guts... I mean... I love abdominal surgery.

#6. I believe that I am going to win the lottery. The odds are in my favor. I have AB negative blood which is the rarest blood type. I have keloid-type skin which is rare, but more so for a 'white girl'. (I think that a little bit of Indian heritage plays a role in this though.) And I have had a golfball sized vestibular schwannoma, a rare brain tumor, surgically removed. Well, almost removed. They weren't able to remove it 100%.

So now...

Still Asking Questions...

***UPDATE***

Press Conference Script from Saturday, April 15, 2006

Statement as read by Purcell Police Chief David Tompkins

Evidence was found and seized from the apartment, to 1 bicycle found dismantled under the Defendant’s bed. The victim, Jamie Rose bolin was found in a plastic tub in the bedroom.

Other Items seized from the apartment included:

- A decorative dagger believed to be used in an attempt to cut off the victim’s head

- A hacksaw

- Duct tape

- Meat tenderizer

- BBQ skewers

- A duffle bag

- A mug, the victim is believed to have brought with her when she entered the apartment on Wednesday

- A video on serial killers

- A computer

- A wooden cutting board

The State Medical Examiners Office performed an autopsy today. The report is being finalized with an official cause of death. The victim is believed to have been hit on the head with the wooden cutting board 3 – 4 times. After which investigators believe the Defendant put his hand over her mouth to smother her as well as having a piece of duct tape put over her mouth. Victim is believed to have died on Wednesday, before law enforcement officers began their search.

Investigators do not believe there are any other victims. Investigators believe there were very likely other potential targets or victims, before Rose was chosen. These other targets were both male and female, both children and adults.

Regarding a potential motive, this appears to have been part of a plan to kidnap a person, rape them, torture them, kill them, cut off their head, drain the body of blood, rape the corpse, eat the corpse then dispose of the organs and bones.

The victim was found with deep saw marks to her neck in an apparent attempt to decapitate the body. It is believed the body was sexually molested after the death.

***UPDATE***

As of Sunday, April 16th, MySpace.com has taken down Kevin Ray Underwood's picture and all associated links.

Kevin Ray Underwood's profile on MySpace is currently "undergoing routine maintenance".

You can still view his picture here.

***UPDATE***

Kevin Ray Underwood's MySpace web page is here.

His screen name is "subspecies23".

***UPDATE***

Authorities have found a body in an apartment at the Purcell Park Apartments in the same apartment complex where 10 year old Jamie Rose Bolin lived.

It is believed to be the body of the missing little girl.

Evidence still needs to be collected and authorities are currently waiting on search warrants so they can search the suspect’s vehicle and apartment. The medical examiner is on their way to pick up the body. A positive identification will be made by the ME’s office.

Police Chief David Tompkins credits the FBI for breaking the case, who has now turned the investigation over to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI).

In custody is Kevin Ray Underwood who reportedly does not have a record or any prior convictions. District Attorney Tim Kuykendall says that he has been a prosecutor for 24 years and states, “…this is nothing like I have seen before. …one of the most heinous, atrocious, and cruel cases… this little girl suffered.”

Mr. Kuykendall said that he will be filing first degree murder charges on Monday morning.

Authorities are also concerned that there is possibly a second suspect who is still at large.

Even if a second suspect was not party to Jamie Bolin’s death, authorities are concerned that there is an internet child predator still at large. The FBI has taken all of the local library’s computers as it is believed that Jamie used the library’s computers for online access.

Purcell is a small community of just over 5,700 residents. There are currently 12 registered sex offenders within the city limits of Purcell, Oklahoma.

***UPDATE***

Jamie Bolin's body has been found in an apartment in the same apartment complex in which her and her father lived.

The police have a suspect in custody.

Sex Offenders: Your Neighbors and School Volunteers

A neighborhood that is adjacent to the Bethany Public Schools has been emotionally rocked with the recent discovery of a sex offender who has been volunteering in their school and living in their midst as a friend and neighbor.

The registered sex offender’s past was discovered via a forwarded e-mail which consisted of an offender registration notice. The automated e-mail subscriber service was provided by The Safe Community Network (ScanUSA.com), which is a free online alert website.

There are currently over 5000 sex offenders in the state of Oklahoma. At the time of this article, 936 offenders are delinquent and in violation of the Sex Offenders Registration Act.

Oklahoma law does not allow registered sex offenders to reside within 2000 feet of a school unless they were already in residence at the time of conviction. Additionally, families, residents, schools, churches, nearby businesses, locations where children or potential victims may congregate, and other individuals of concern are not notified by authorities unless the offender is designated as an aggravated or habitual sex offender.

Oklahoma Senate Bill 440 provides for the release of sex offender registry information to the State Superintendent of Public Schools. The current superintendent, Sandy Garrett, has a posting on the Department of Education’s website which states:

“The information is now available within easy access of all educators, parents and community members who visit our Web site. Protecting children is an overriding concern for all of us. Access to current information is essential in ensuring each school staff person is thoroughly investigated prior to hiring or when there is suspicion of illegal or unethical behavior.”

According to the Oklahoma County Tax Assessor’s records, the Bethany sex offender in question was in possession of his current residence before his conviction date. However, the sex offender has volunteered many times, including overnight trips with band students, at the Bethany Public Schools.

Senate Bill 440 does not address the status of sex offenders that are parents of school aged children. Although, the bill does state the following:

“The Superintendent of Public Instruction is authorized to copy and distribute information from the sex offender registry to school districts and individual public and private schools within the state with a notice using the following or similar language: “A person whose name appears on this registry has been convicted of a sex offense. Continuing to employ a person whose name appears on this registry may result in civil liability for the employer or criminal prosecution pursuant to Section 589 of Title 57 of the Oklahoma Statutes."

Many policy making decisions are left up to the individual districts across the state. Should there be a standardized policy concerning background checks for volunteers within the state’s public school system?

According to familywatchdog.us, there are currently 12 other sex offenders that live within close proximity of the Bethany Public School Campus. Eight of them have convictions that involve children. Six live approximately ½ mile, or less, from the school property. The current 2000 feet distance requirement that registered sex offenders must keep from a school is just over 665 yards; 1/2 of a mile is 880 yards.

Within walking distance of the Bethany Public School properties are: the Southern Nazarene University campus and dorms, a private grade school, and church.

But this isn’t just the Bethany School District’s problem. Three square miles includes Bethany Public Schools, SNU, Putnam City High School, Central Middle School, Central Elementary School, Dolese Youth Park, Eldon Lyon Park, numerous churches and neighborhoods, and 36 registered sex offenders.

Sexual Predator... *Head Count*...

Well, someone forwarded me this neat little link.

It's an interactive map. You type in your address and the map pops up. It shows where your house is and where the sex offenders are. It also shows the schools and tells you how far away the sex offender lives or works from the school.

The map is provided by Family Watchdog.

They have quite a bit of information on their website.

They also have an offender count by state.

Oklahoma has 5139 Sex offenders

For those of you who live in Nevada, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, and Vermont; you guys might want to start writing some of your representatives and congressmen.

The Family Watchdog states that they are still working on data for these states because...

"These states either do not provide address data or do not have a centralized registry".

I think that not having sex offender data available is criminal behavior by those state governments. This information should be easily accessible by the public in general.

Once again, I have been spammed by sexual predator movement alerts.

I will continue to post the names of these individuals as long as I feel that there is a need for it.

Just this past week, someone googled a sex offender's name and found them listed on my blog. A lot of people who google names, or themselves, aren't searching on the Oklahoma Department of Corrections website.

While I don't live in Nevada, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, or Vermont...

Who says one of these people might not move there?

As several people have said, as recently as just a few days ago...

It's a small world.

I Think I'll Run for Congress...

Parker cleaned and vacuumed his room today.

It's a chore that we all hate to do, but sometimes things get to the point that it becomes nearly a health and medical necessity to do it.

Parker's solution to cleaning his bedroom is quite simple.

You get big lawn and leaf trashbags, fill them up, and put it all out at the curb. And if, by chance, there is something that's just a little too good to throw away...

You stick it in a bag, slap a sign on it, and put it out on the curb too.

D.T. has posted a brand new cartoon. He always has a lot of symbolism in his pictures. It takes more than a couple of looks to catch all the nuances of his art. He weaves so many little details into the pictures that you will miss them if you only give it a casual glance.

Danny has a post about immigration and the Mexican Constitution. It seems that Mexico would have already taken care of their illegal alien problem...

*pronto*

He has a little synopsis of Mexican law:

Foreigners may not in any way participate in the political affairs of the country. This ban applies, among other things, to participation in demonstrations and the expression of opinions in public about domestic politics.

Equal employment rights are denied to immigrants, even legal ones, even those with green cards.

Only citizens may serve in the military as officers, on airline crews, and chiefs of seaports and airports.

Members of both houses of Congress as well as the Supreme Court must be a citizen by birth.

Immigrants — even legal ones — may not become members of the clergy.

Foreigners, legal or illegal, may not own land.

Any citizen may arrest illegal immigrants and their accomplices, turning them over without delay to the nearest authorities.

Foreigners, legal or otherwise, may be expelled for any reason and without due process.

Thomas has found a wonderful deal on a little black and white television that you can take camping with you. It costs $15! He has already given a report on how well it works "out in the field". A television would be something good to have when you are out camping in Oklahoma. Especially in the volatile spring time weather. I think I might buy us one.

I'll have a hard time prying the money out of my hands right now though. At this time of year I use any extra cash and spare change that I have on bedding plants...

It's a weakness, I know.

Congress has decided that they need to enact some legislation concerning the donation of tissues and tissue banks. It makes me wonder if they have decided that there could be a problem out there with other body snatchers.

S.2609 : A bill to improve the oversight and regulation of tissue banks and the tissue donation process, and for other purposes.
Sponsor: Sen Schumer, Charles E. [NY] (introduced 4/7/2006) Cosponsors (1)
Committees: Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions
Latest Major Action: 4/7/2006 Referred to Senate committee. Status: Read twice and referred to the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.

The text of the bill isn't available yet.

I'm wondering what "...and for other purposes" means.

hmmm...

I found out that the government gives members of Congress a whole lot of retirement money. They even have a special scale, just in case you only serve for 5 years.

There's a special retirement program for civil *servants* of the executive branch in the federal government. It's part of the retirement benefits for the members of Congress.

It has it's own formula that multiplies three factors together. One of the multiplying factors being the number of years that you served.

Retiring after 22 years of service with an annual pension of $84,847 probably seems like a struggle for them.

Especially if you are used to making $154,267 a year.

So that's why you can also participate in a program that's called a "Thrift Savings Plan".

Plus, you get your social security benefits too.

They also have automatic COLA's (cost of living adjustments).

This sure does make my little social security nest egg seem a tad small. The way it looks right now, my social security benefits won't even reach the national poverty level.

So I've decided that maybe I should run for Congress. If I could win a seat, and keep it for at least 5 years, I would be a lot farther ahead in this game.

My regular earnings after five years in Congress would almost be the equivalent of me working from now until I retire.

This would also give me an added benefit of having a pension plan to go along with my social security.

The reason why Congress put in this special retirement program for themselves was because it...

...would contribute to independence of thought and action, [be] an inducement for retirement for those of retiring age or with other infirmities, [and] bring into the legislative service a larger number of younger Members with fresh energy and new viewpoints concerning the economic, social, and political problems of the Nation.

Hey, I'm a lot younger than Ted Kennedy and I have lots of good ideas too.

As far as energy goes...

Well, I like to conserve mine if at all possible.

And my viewpoints concerning economic, social, and political problems of the nation...

They just can't be beat.

I'm all for cleaning *The House* with lawn and leaf trashbags...

How Big Do You Think This Thing Is...

Let's see here... Where are those posts...

They're here in my archives...

Do you guys remember me telling you about the "Body Parts Snatching Ring" that was busted?

The first time I wrote about it was back in February.

The second time I wrote about it was when the daughter of one of the deceased "victims" wrote an article about her father's missing tissues.

He was very elderly and died of cancer you know.

And then there was the first report of Priscilla Loveland from Cushing, Oklahoma, who had been notified that she had received a cadaver bone from one of the untested/unscreened/illegal/recalled body parts.

Linda in Norman gave me a head's up today and told me that the local paper, the Daily Oklahoman, had printed a front page story about this problem.

Here's a link to the online story.

The Oklahoman also has links to the FDA's notices that they mailed out back in 2005 concerning the unsettling situation.

The FDA has a *recall page* which contains a running list of the recalls. There were five tissue processors that had received the illegal biologicals. Each of these companies have their recall listed on this FDA page.

The FDA's announcement concerning the situation says in part:

Some of this tissue may have been implanted into patients from early 2004 to September 2005. The tissue was recovered by BTS from human donors who may not have met FDA donor eligibility requirements and who may not have been properly screened for certain infectious diseases. At this time, the implicated tissues from BTS include human bone, skin, and tendons. These products represent only a small percentage of the overall U.S. tissue supply.

Gee whiz... do you reckon there's a lot of people walking around with these illegal and possibly tainted biologicals in them?

Evidently the Daily Oklahoman contacted the FDA with this very same question.

The Federal Food and Drug Administration officials Friday refused to say how many Oklahomans recieved the potentially tainted body parts during surgeries that took place from early 2004 to September 2005. At least 15 Oklahoma medical facilities performed surgeries with potentially tainted bone tissue.

It is now thought as many as 30 funeral homes may be involved and thousands of body parts were taken from more than 1,000 cadavers, according to public reports.

The "Body Snatcher Ring" that was busted this past fall aren't the only ones doing this kind of thing. It's too lucrative of a business for it *not* to be going on in other places around the country.

The tissue processors are paying way too much money for these cadaver parts for there not to be any significant illegal activity.

I will say it once again...

This problem is a lot deeper than the 6 feet it appears to be.

Today...

Well folks, I have some good news.

I was able to read an entire chapter of that book without falling asleep.

The bad news is that I certainly need to read more than one chapter this week-end.

When I think about that book I get this overwhelming feeling that I would rather pull all the hair out of my head than read it.

I've gotten Parker started on a little outdoor project this afternoon. There's this section of chainlink fencing on the side of the house... I am sure that it served a purpose at one time or another, and it certainly isn't torn up or run down looking. But I don't use it and I really don't like it. So I am taking it down.

Rather, Parker is taking it down for me.

I was called in to work this afternoon and was there for a little while. I went in for one ultrasound and more of 'em just kept coming. Needless to say, they were very busy at work today.

I have also started a bit of research for another paper...

I ran across this story:

Chiropractor Claims He Can Go Back in Time

This guy may loose his license to practice because he does long distance adjustments. In other words, you don't have to go see him to get 'fixed up'.

The "non-office" visit is $60 and the adjustment can be done over the phone or by e-mail. Satisfaction Guaranteed.

The *practitioner's* name is James Burda, and he has also made up this word "Bahlaqeem" that supposedly describes what he does. He says its some sort of vibration thing.

This doctor also hands out some advice concerning your problem and treatment:

"I promise that I will do my best to help you. Right now there are two reasons why this treatment may not work and they are 1) you really do not want to get better and / or 2) the pain or other symptom is there so that you can learn a lesson, which comes from the highest of sources."

Heck... I can come up with better stuff than that!

How do you set up a Paypal account on this blog thingy?

I need to visit "supersaverdiploma.com" and get my order in pronto.

Time's a wastin'...

I've got treatments to "invent",

vibrations to "send",

and patients to "see"...

Convention News...

The kids are home safe and sound.

They appear to be quite *pooped*.

Carrie has been on the telephone and Parker has tied up my computer the entire evening. So things are getting back to normal again.

According to my two field correspondents:

The convention competition in Arlington, Texas, consisted of over 400 competitors aged 13 to 18 years of age. There are no age divisions between the competitors. Entries are judged and the top six are awarded medals with a nod to move forward to the international competition which will be held at the end of May into the first week of June.

Neither Parker's nor Carrie's photography entries placed. Carrie received a perfect score of 300 and Parker got a high score of 297 on one of his three entries. Even with these scores they did not place in their divisions. Parker said that there were over 200 photography entries.

Parker placed 2nd in the Engineering Division for his science project. He is 13 years old and did an excellent job for his first year of competition!

Carrie is 15 years old and placed 5th in the 800 meter run. She is also the fourth leg on the girls' 1600 meter relay. The girls' 1600 meter relay team placed 2nd! Carrie's academic quiz team also placed 2nd.

So Carrie and Parker both qualify for the international convention!

The rest of my track team made a good showing with each of my 200 and 400 meter runners placing. Carrie said that there was a lot of competition for them.

Also... my boys' 1600 meter relay team placed 2nd!

Yippee!

There's some question of whether or not the girls' volleyball team will get to advance or not as they were 2nd in the tournament play. I'm not sure, but I think only the winners of tournament play get to advance. We'll probably find out next week about more convention details.

Twenty kids from our school participated this past week. We think that only one student did not place in any event which is really really sad.

So that's pretty much the run down from the kids' week of competition. I'll let you guys know if there are any more interesting details to share as they come available.

In other news...

I have had to turn our heater back on tonight. We had a high of 74 degrees today, and then suddenly a brief rain came and a cold front moved through. Our temperatures are continuing to drop and are expected to be into the 30's by morning. Right now it is about 47 degrees and the wind is blowing around 25 to 30 mph.

So yeah... there's a wind chill out there.

You guys have a great week-end and I'll catch you back here...

Okay... I Fell Asleep in My Chair... So What?

The neighbor came by this evening and knocked on my door and asked me what was going on.

I said, "What are you talking about?"

Connie then points to my front yard.

My front lawn is emblazened with bright lights and a carnivalistic atmosphere has overtaken it.

There is this huge, gigantic blue blow-up swimming pool with a giant slide on one end *and* in the middle. There are water fountains and sprinkler thingies spraying over the slides. There is blue vinyl surrounding the entire pool so that your feet never touch the ground.

Kids are all over the place playing and splashing and running around the monstrous kaleidoscopic swimming pool. There's water spraying and splashing everywhere. The bright lights that are surrounding it makes the splashing water appear like there are diamonds flying everywhere. And music is playing...

I walk up to a man standing next to an 18-wheeler. I presume that this is the vehicle that delivered *the exhibit* to my front lawn. I ask him what is he doing here and, "Why are you doing this in my front yard!?"

The man says that I signed up for some kind of sampling survey thingy and that this is one of the *samples*. He added, "We're testing the market in your neighborhood."

*What the heck?!*

Carrie then comes up to me and starts telling me about her convention trip... and how her ceramic dog broke and that it didn't get to be judged because it was broken on the trip down.

Then Carrie tells me how she didn't do well at all with any of her entries.

Hey... Wait a minute! What *ceramic dog*?!

And then I woke up.

Can you sue a university and a professor for *brain injury*??

I have been having the hardest time reading this book that we have been assigned in my government class. I can't hardly stand it. I keep falling asleep when I try to read it.

This evening was not any different... I am trying to read my book. I got really, really sleepy and fell asleep in *my chair*. Again!

I had this crazy dream... and woke up at 9pm!!

I was asleep for THREE HOURS!

Geez...........

I think my brain is being tortured and traumatized by this *horrible* book!

Somehow my neuropathways are trying to protect themselves from the horrible abuse of boredom.

I am *never* bored... and my brain is having quite a physiological reaction to this book!

I am being emotionally tortured...

In fact... I think my whole body is being traumatized by this book.

What am I going to do?

I have to write a TEN PAGE PAPER on this @#%~& book!!!

Another dilemma...

I have been tagged by two people...

Delectual

and

Scan Man's Notes

*guilt*

It's all my fault.

It's my fault for being soooo slow...

I guess that's how you get tagged. Right?

For being slow?

I'm sorry.

I will see what I can do.

I have really never travelled, nor am I as an exciting of a person as everyone else is, and well...

I just don't do what a lot of other normal people do?

I have just now eaten my dinner and now it's time for ?bed?

Just Wondering...

Well...

I still haven't heard a thing from my kids. I hate to say this but I am getting impatient. I want to know how the kids have done with their entries and events.

How did Carrie do in her 800 meter run?

How about Parker's science project?

I found out that the photography competition is pretty stiff...

I wonder how the kids' photo entries did against the competition?

*sigh*

The picture is from Parker's science project.

The floating cube that is between the "diamagnetic material" is a neodymium magnet.

Neodymium magnets are very powerful. The large ones come with a warning because you can actually be injured by them. Wow!

Can you believe that magnets can actually float? This has got to be one of the coolest science projects ever.

Here is a link to a very similar looking project.

Sorry, I didn't get any other photos taken before we packed Parker's project up for the trip. But it gives you a good idea of what it looks like.

By the way... Parker didn't want to do the 'bismuth melting thing' because he said it looked ugly.

hmmppff...

Parker is 13 years old and is beginning to get picky about *some things*.

I wish he would get picky about his bedroom.

One more thing...

Tomorrow is Justin's 26th birthday!

Happy Birthday, Justin!

Yes... I have children that no longer live at home. My oldest, Justin, currently lives in San Francisco (for the time being at least).

A Regular Day...

We see all sorts of patients at work... even 'ornery' little gerbils.

This little guy is pretty sick, but it didn't seem to curb his biting a bit. Gerbils can bite really hard too.!

On the spur of the moment, I took this picture of Dr. Rachel Reeves today. She is one of the many doctors we have at the hospital. She likes to work with all the 'pocket' pets, reptiles, exotics, and other 'non-traditional' family pets that we have come through our doors.

You can always tell when Dr. Rachel is scheduled to come in, because the lobby starts to fill up with rowdy and noisy patients that are there to see her. The lobby is sometimes louder than the zoo when you incorporate a bunch of parrots and birds. In fact, after you add in a couple of snakes and Iguanas, you could say it becomes a jungle out there!

So as not to be outdone by my children's photographic competitiveness, I have decided to see if I can get some of my pictures accepted into the Oklahoma Veterinary Medical Association's 2007 calendar.

By the way... I haven't heard from either of my kids since they left yesterday morning.

I wonder how things are going?

Counterfeiting Time...

Just back from work 'again' a little bit ago...

I missed the NCAA Championship basketball game.

It doesn't appear to have been much of game anyway. Oh well.

I seem to run short on time...

If only I could create more time, or lengthen it, when and where I needed or wanted more of it.

I could make more time when I was really having fun, or give myself a little bit more time if I am working on a project.

I would never be late to anything and I would always have all the sleep that I needed!

How about those wonderful and special days when my children were little. I would have liked to lengthen the periods of time when they were cute and perfect little angels.

If only I could create more time.

I certainly know how to waste plenty of it.

Of course, there are instances when I would like to shorten time, those periods of life that are painful or are just plain ugly. Times like these really don't need to be given any more time than absolutely necessary.

Time is like water running through my fingers.

My hands get wet, but they can't hold any of it.

Evaporation soon erases all evidence that it was even there...

Convention Starts... Tomorrow...

I believe that we have everything packed and ready to go.

Parker's science project is in the box.

Carrie's and Parker's photo entries are matted and tucked away in a little portfolio case.

Running shoes, uniforms, clothes, socks, underwear, pajamas, toothpaste and toothbrushes, shampoo, bath soap, towel and washcloth...

Sleeping bags, packed suitcases, and grocery sacks full of snacks and "what-nots" are sitting by the door...

All is waiting to be carried out to the van in the morning.

I surely hope that we haven't forgotten anything.

I guess they could do "without" some of this stuff.

I just have this gigantic fear that an important item will be left, like a competition entry... or something like that.

I am setting my alarm for 5am so I had better 'git'...

Say my prayers...

Bless my kids...

And get some sleep.

You guys all have a good Monday.

Heartland Share...

Garden variety thunderstorms have finished rolling through here tonight. They are still heading east, but seem to be diminishing in strength.

We didn't have much more than heavy rain and a lot of lightening and thunder here at the house.

It was a much welcomed rain.

Have any of you heard of Heartland Share?

This sounds like a neat idea.

According to their website, this is not donated food.

I volunteer quite a few hours.

I think I should check into this.
