Just Thinking...

I thought you guys might like to know that I have an update about Betty and her electric bill.

So far Shepherds of Love Ministry has collected $925 of the $1530 that is needed for Betty's OG&E (electric) bill. This money came from Teresa's e-mail request for help.

Wow. Great response!

I expect that they will be able to raise the rest of the money soon.

That will be good.

I got to reminiscing this warm summer evening...

I was reminded of a time when all the kids (all 15) and I were at the pond fishing.

There was a pond behind the house we lived in, and in that pond were some really nice crappie and large mouth bass.

Every so often we would walk through the pasture, down to the pond, and try to catch "Big Daddy Bass".

There was a bass in that pond that was just enormous.

On days like this, he would come to the surface of the water...

And skim near the surface.

He would slowly open and close his huge mouth...

Taunting us, it seemed, on those hot and thirsty summer days.

None of us had been able to land this huge bass.

We had many a broken fishing line to prove it.

But it never stopped us from trying...

And we were always prepared to haul that monster in, because nobody ever forgot to bring the net down to the pond with us.

Well, this particular evening, we were down there trying to catch that fish.

I was sitting on a plastic lawn chair on the steep bank...

Baiting hooks, answering questions (always answering questions), and trying (in general) to just relax.

Then suddenly, I got a *hit*...

and I could tell it was a "big one"!

In my effort to set the hook, I over-reacted, lost my balance on the steep bank...

Me, the pole, and my chair landed in the warm waters of that muddy pond.

After their shock, all the kids started laughing at me.

~Mom~ had fallen in the pond!

What a sight I was.

And boy...

Was I mad!

All I had wanted to do was sit and relax.

I had had a particularly difficult day.

All I needed was to sit down and rest for a while.

I didn't care if I caught a fish or not.

So, I sloshed back up the hill to the house, kids in tow....

~mad~

In my mind, my couple of hours of rest by the pond had been ruined.

I went in the house and took a shower.

After my shower, I then stomped downstairs and announced to everyone that I wasn't going to cook dinner.

The house became silent.

Eyes got big with fear crossing a few of them.

What was going to happen?

Mom was still ~mad~!

We had a jar on the kitchen counter where we would place spare change. We called it the "Restaurant Jar". When there was enough money in the jar, we would go out to eat at El Chico's, or some other favorite restaurant.

We would get various 'donations' for our jar from friendly visitors. ;+ )

I grabbed the jar and *eyeballed* the contents. It was short.

I emptied it into my hands and said, "Everyone, get in the van."

Kids started running out the door.

I grabbed my purse and off we drove.

Whenever we would go anywhere we were always quite the sight.

And of course, the kids were always obliging whenever someone was interested in striking up a conversation.

That evening, we laughed, and ate...

And ate, and laughed.

The kids told everyone my "Fishing Tale" and the reason *why* we got to go out to eat that evening.

Because Mom was too mad to cook.

The waitress was quite entertained.

I am reminded of that day quite often it seems.

Sometimes by Carrie and Parker. They still relive that tale and laugh about Mom falling into the pond.

Sometimes by scents and sounds...

Most certainly by the weather.

And sometimes by God.

Dog Days...

I didn't do much of anything this week-end.

I just ~vegged~ out.

A short jaunt to work late this afternoon and well...

That was about it.

102 degrees Fahrenheit today.

Day Number 17 of 100 degree, or 100+, temperatures.

Certainly not a record, or anything like that.

We sure do like to complain about the heat, but most of us have it so good.

With air conditioning in our homes AND our cars.

We can set the thermostat, sit back with a TV remote...

And something cool to drink.

No troubles sleeping at night with the A/C on.

And the sheets don't stick to you either.

My kids don't really know what it's like to live without central heat and air.

I do.

And we're blessed.

I learned something new.

I never new where the term "dog days of summer" came from.

Now I do.

dog days \DOG-DAYZ\ noun

*1 : the hot sultry period of summer between early July and early September in the northern hemisphere
2 : a period of stagnation or inactivity

Example sentence:
With the steamy dog days upon us, air conditioners are selling like hotcakes.

Did you know?
Dogs aren't the only creatures uncomfortable in oppressive heat, so why does a dog get singled out in "dog days"? The dog here is actually the Dog Star, which is also called "Sirius." The star has long been associated with sultry weather in the northern hemisphere because it rises simultaneously with the sun during the hottest days of summer. In the ancient Greek constellation system, this star (called "Seirios" in Greek) was considered the hound of the hunter Orion and was given the epithet "Kyon," meaning "dog." The Greek writer Plutarch referred to the hot days of summer as "hēmerai kynades" (literally, "dog days") and a Latin translation of this _expression as "dies caniculares" is the source of our English phrase.

*Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Do you think those Greek folks knew what it was like to live without air conditioning?

Blogging Anniversary...

Thanks to all for the inquiries and well wishes concerning my health. I am feeling much better than earlier in the week; however, I have a nasty sounding cough and large amounts of mucous still coming from my nasal passages. At least I am not running a fever, something which makes everyone feel very poorly.

A Special Thanks goes to "My Neighbor Sue", who fixed dinner for me the other night and brought it over from across the street.

*God Bless You, Sue!*

I am truly blessed.

After a week of being either at work or in bed...

Last evening I was prepared to get caught up on my blogging friends' posts and make my 411th post of the last 365 days.

However...

A veterinarian from a practice in a neighboring city called requesting an emergency ultrasound last night. So I went back to work and got home at about 2am this morning.

I was tired... midnight had passed...

So I went to bed.

The desire to celebrate had been drained from me.

Yesterday was the First Year Anniversary of my very first blogging post, Intestinal Foreign Bodies...

While exploring the blogging community I have made some awesome friends and learned a lot of things.

There's quite a bit to know about internet self-publishing, and I have found that I run short on time on trying to learn the tricks of the trade.

A few things I would like to know, if anyone is so inclined to share, is how do you get colored text into your posts and how do you make those lines through your words? Or how about those colored boxes with text inside of them?

Is there a free online school for this stuff?

How do you figure it all out?

I have finally mastered italics and bold, but I'm afraid that's the main extent of my HTML prowess.

Well...

I did discover blockquotes recently.

It was a while before I discovered that you could "see" who was stopping by your blog as well as "how they were getting there".

Intrigued by my *Sitemeter*, I believe that I spend more time looking at it than I do my own blog.

~laugh~

While it was some time before I got the site counter 'installed', I still feel that I would probably be short of 10,000 visits for my first year of blogging even it had been on my blog from "Day One".

As of midnight last night, I have had 9,336 visits.

Believe me guys when I say from the heart,

Thank you so much for your patronage and friendship!

So far, blogging has been a great hobby for me...

And it's cheaper than buying gas.

And no...

I'm not addicted.

The World of Self...

We had primary elections in Oklahoma today.

There will be quite a few run-offs in four weeks.

What has caught my eye is how few people have voted.

Yes, they are only the primaries, but these are the candidates that will constitute the general elections in November.

So a few questions roll through my fever-ridden mind...

What do people believe in?

Do they have any strong feelings about matters that are outside of their "world".

You know... Outside of our everyday lives.

Most Americans live a pretty "cushy" life-style.

Even our poor citizens are richer than most country's regular citizens.

In 1998, a living wage in Haiti was 58¢ an hour, and El Salvador was a whopping $1.18 an hour.

We all know that our living standards are much higher than most. I don't really know how much living that a $1.18 an hour job would get us somewhere else.

How many television sets are in an average American home now? Video games?

How many miles do we drive to entertain ourselves, get us to work, go to the stores...

We certainly don't walk out of necessity in this country.

We walk so we'll look good to 'ourselves'...

And others, of course.

One thing is for sure...

Poor Americans aren't held by the same standards as the poor in other countries.

How much trouble is it to go and vote?

I mean, really.

You're not giving up any life-blood, or anything like that.

There's not even a dress code at the polling booths.

So you don't have to worry about how you look.

Do Americans feel strongly about anything of national importance?

I mean, strong feelings.

Like, "willing to die for" convictions.

There are folks out there who are willing to die for their beliefs.

And they're willing to kill for them too.

Are we so lazy, and wrapped up within ourselves, that we'll be caught off-guard...

Again?

Yeah...

It was only a primary election.

And we already have tomorrow planned for ourselves.

But what if there weren't anymore elections in the United States...

Ever.

Not Too Good Right About Now...

I'm sick.

I'm running a low-grade fever (100.2F) and I have some kind of 'bad head cold'.

I don't feel good at all.

Stuffed up head, sneezing, burning/watery eyes, aching, coughing...

You know the drill.

Also...

My water heater decided to give up the ghost.

So...

I'm sick and I don't have any hot water in the house.

I feel so bad right now that I really don't care either.

Sorry for the downer post.

I try really hard to not complain, and I usually don't tell people when I'm not feeling good or having a hard time physically.

Maybe I'll feel a lot better...

We're Back Home...

After flying all night and most of the day, we are back home.

We took the scenic route to the airport. The plane wasn't scheduled to leave until after 10pm Friday night (Honolulu time).

Trying to make lasting impressions upon our memories...

We landed on the tarmac in Oklahoma City at almost 3:30 Saturday afternoon (CST).

We're duly tired from our plane trip and need to go to bed.

There's a five hour time difference between Oklahoma and Hawai'i.

It will take us a little while to adjust.

Thank goodness the Lord answered everyone's prayers concerning the temperatures here.

It seems that a cool front has come through the state, giving the residents much needed relief from the heat wave.

Thanks for sharing our time in Hawai'i with us.

It was a most wonderful trip and something that we'll never forget.

Postcards from Hawai'i

Shark's Cove is up the road from where we are staying. The area is known for its excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities.

So we went there this morning to do some snorkeling.

Sea urchins, eels, and numerous multi-colored fish were seen up close and personal. It was very, very nice.

Up the shore, about another mile, is a section of a solid rock shoreline. On this rock, a thick algae grows.

The sea turtles come to the shore to eat the algae.

This is probably the most amazing encounter of our entire trip.

These gentle giants are wonderful to watch as they use the ocean waves to bring them in, and then take them back out again.

We saw dozens of these turtles *grazing* along the rocks as well as swimming close by the shoreline.

It was absolutely amazing!

Tomorrow evening we will be catching our flight back to the North American continent, and then on to Oklahoma.

We will be taking home with us many wonderful memories...

And we'll be saying a melancholy farewell to the beautiful islands of Hawai'i.

Postcards from Hawai'i

When you think about the people who have died serving our country, it is a very humbling experience.

Even today, we are still blessed to have patriotic men and women who are willing to do something for me, and my children, that I am unable to do.

They are willing to leave behind their families, in order to protect mine.

I am so very thankful to them.

Postcards from Hawai'i

Let's explore a jungle.

Let your senses take in the exotic scents and sights.

Let your eyes feast upon the beauty that God has provided.

Follow a jungle stream...

And see where it takes you.

What a joyous adventure.

Bloggers Anonymous Meeting at Diamond Head and Waikiki Beach...

We hiked .8 of a mile (1.3 km) to the summit of Diamond Head (elevation 761 feet/232 meters). It was a fairly strenuous hike, but was well worth the effort.

This is a view of the Waikiki Beach Lighthouse.

The views from the summit are absolutely fantastic!

This is a view from the summit of the Diamond Head crater floor.

I have arranged for a luau on Waikiki Beach. However, it's BYOB (Bring Your Own Blog).

I think the Waikiki experience is best begun at dusk.

All are welcome to come to the Blogger's Anonymous meeting.

You may want to hike Diamond Head first and then join us on Waikiki Beach. The Diamond Head State Monument closes at 6pm, so you will need to arrive there before 430pm to complete the trek.

Or some may like to go shopping on Waikiki Beach.

Dinner will be served at 830pm with the meeting beginning at 915pm (PST), so please plan your time wisely.

later...

**P.S. = If I'm not here (due to other pressing activities, or lack of internet connection) please begin the meeting without me.

Dinner has already been pre-paid.

Enjoy!

Postcards from Hawai'i

I just took my last walk on the beach before calling it a day. I love looking at the stars and listening to the ocean.

You have never seen so many stars in your life.

Parker is always looking for the biggest waves.

He has actually walked a half of a mile down the beach to find the perfect spot.

Carrie was trying to get away from this wave, but she didn't make it. She was overcome from behind.

Both of the kids are having a wonderful time.

I'm enjoying watching them.

There are flowers everywhere. The colors are very bold and bright. There are so many plants here that you see in your local nursery.

But what you see in the nursery are 'tiny' specimens compared to what is here in the wild.

Some of these "meek and mild nursery plants" are absolutely enormous here on the island!

Most of these plants are growing like weeds out of every nook and cranny.

And what's even more amazing is that it seems like everything is in continuous bloom.

Well, I had best get going.

You guys have a great Monday and I'll catch you back here...

Unfinished Business...

We're leaving to catch a plane here in a little bit.

I received an e-mail from Teresa at Shepherd's of Love Ministry last night, and I just can't leave without posting her immediate needs on here.

My family and I are so blessed, and with the temperatures hovering at 100 degrees Fahrenheit, I just can't leave without trying to help this lady out. Even if she doesn't have air conditioning, she needs electricity so that she can run some fans.

If anyone is so inclined to help, all the information is at the bottom of the post. Of course, you can click on the link in my sidebar for Shepherds of Love.

I personally vouch for this ministry, and they do what they say they will do.

You guys have a blessed week-end and I'll be back here...

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Dear Friends,

We met a lady today who truly needs a miracle in her life. As you know we are not able to help everyone who calls but we believe God wants us to do what we can.

Betty is 33 years old, single, a dedicated Christian,
who lives with a Gastric Pacemaker and Diabetes.
She lives on $600.00 a month and $140.00 in food
stamps. Her rents is $522.00 leaving her $78.00. Her parents assist her with other needs.

21 months ago she made a special arrangement with
OGE and due to her illness they agreed to accept
whatever payments Betty could make. Now because
she is so far behind they want the entire amount
by July 21 st or her electicity will be shut off.

She has called churches and other ministries for over
two weeks seeking help but because her bill is so high they will not even speak with her. Today was different for her because we took the time to listen
to her worries and fear. We belive God wants us to
raise this money as a blessing to Betty.

The amount is $1530.00. I know this is big but our
God owns it all and this is nothing to Him. It is our
prayer that you will pray and make a donation of any size so we can keep her electricity on and restore her hope.

Can you imagine living on $600.00? I cannot.
Imagine having no air conditioning or electricity!
Betty is just one of hundreds in our city who need
help. Donations are down and this is why we are asking many of you by email.

WE believe Betty is the one God wants us to fight for.

If you feel so lead please make a check to:
Shepherds of Love
Po Box 5043
Edmond, Ok 73083
Memo Line of your ck: Betty/OGE

As your pledges come in we will contact OGE and
we will pay directly to OGE.

What I really would like to have Sue, is an automatic sprinkler system for my yard and flower beds.

But God has been Good and has done a better job of watering my yard this week than I could have ever done with my 150 yards of water hoses.

And yes, I did try to get on the show "Survivor". The kids and I stood in line for several hours for our turn at an audition when they came to Oklahoma City.

It was not too long after my surgery and I knew that I wasn't physically fit to go on such an adventure.

It was something that I did for the kids.

I did it to show them that I was going to be ok, and that everything was going to be alright.

The kids and I used to watch that show faithfully. Before I started going to school that is.

We would like to be on Survivor together. In fact, I told the producer that they should develop a Family Survivor series just so that we could be on the show together.

And yes Pattie...

We're going on a trip.

A most wonderful adventure!

Something that we have never ever done before.

Dr. A got really, really close at guessing too.

We're leaving for Hawaii tomorrow.

We'll be gone for eight days.

And we're really excited!

This is a most wonderful blessing, and we are so thankful for the opportunity.

I'm sorry that you can't go Wolfbaby.

I don't know how or what to pack as we usually only go see Nana and Pa, or go on an occasional camping trip.

So I think I might have packed too much!

I'm so glad that I am a member of Blogger's Anonymous.

It will help me to vacation guilt-free as I post from the island paradise!

Maybe the Blogger's Anonymous meeting could be held in Hawaii??

I Need a Vacation...

It is extremely hot and muggy.

After our drenching rain last night, we got pretty close to 100 degrees today.

We're expecting to hit the century mark sometime this week.

With the uncomfortable temperatures folks' tempers start to flare up.

Things got a little heated next door late this evening.

I didn't actually see what was going on but I sure could hear it.

Since I am partially deaf, you can imagine the racket that was going on.

It sounded like the female was getting pounded into a car.

Oklahoma's domestic abuse statistics are not very pretty...

With violence occurring in 1 out of every 6 intimate partner relationships.

What's staggering are the high school statistics concerning violence between boyfriends and girlfriends.

"...The rate of dating violence for Oklahoma ninth graders is more than three times the national average, at a rate of 26 percent for Oklahoma freshman, compared to 8 percent nationwide."

Dang.

They're starting young these days.

Yes...

I called the police.

I just couldn't stand hearing her scream "NO! NO! NO!".

Rolling With the Flow...

We're getting some really nice rain right now.

I know that some folks have gotten some hail and wind damage, but hopefully it hasn't been too much.

There's a lot of lightning too.

Right now...

I'm really happy to have the rain.

I'm enjoying the thunder and lightning and I just can't seem to stay in the house.

I love watching it so.

What a blessing it is.

I am going in to work to do an ultrasound here in a few minutes.

My neighbor Sue sent me another e-mail about her house painting project and to let me know that she was putting up some shutters too.

Sue also apologized for not letting me know about painting her house:

Sorry I didn't inform you that I was getting it painted before I had it done and if the grey and white would be ok.

That was nice of her.

Apology accepted.

But my neighbor Sue had to put a little zinger in the last line of her e-mail:

Hope you had a good trip and I'm glad your back safe.

Oh, by the way, you didn't inform me that you were going Hmmmph.....

Sunday, July 09, 2006

We made the trip and we are back home safe and sound.

Even though my kids are getting quite a bit older, they still seem to have difficulties traveling for any distance in a car.

While it appears that they are easier to keep happy than a very small child strapped into a sweltering car seat, they still do require entertainment during a lengthy drive.

Parker is a typical male child in that he must conquer his world. As you can see, he is larger than life and can hold very large things between the tips of his fingers.

This gives him a sense of power over his universe.

And his older sister Carrie as well.

Here is Maria trying to duplicate Parker's technique with her camera. Maria is Carrie's best friend, and she got to go and stay at Nana and Pa's in Texas too.

The highway part of the trip was fairly uneventful. We did take some time off the highway to stop by Ft. Sill and to also go to the Ft. Sill National Cemetery.

It is a very nice military cemetery that was only established a few years ago.

So we're almost home and what do I see walking down the side of the road?

I see two very young girls dragging overnight bags behind them.

The youngest couldn't have been over three years old.

Oh dear.

It about makes me sick. I stop to talk to them. The older girl whispers in the little one's ear who then takes off running back in the direction they had come from.

The oldest girl states that she is nine years old and that she doesn't have a home.

I think to myself, "I know better than that".

I look her over and I get this very uneasy feeling. I fear that they are abused.

So I made a judgement call and I phoned the police.

I hope that things go well for them.

I most definitely will be keeping a watchful eye out for them.

Back to getting home...

I don't know about your kids, but mine just could't stand for the fun to end.

And they wanted to go see Pirates of the Caribbean, Dead Man's Chest, before calling it a (very) long day.

So we drove to Yukon to watch it at the 'dollar' theatre.

It's actually $3 now, but it really did use to be only $1.

While we are driving on Garth Brooks Boulevard, Parker spies a red fox in the high school parking lot.

What the heck?

We pull off the road and watch it cross the street.

Parker got out and was able to take several pictures of it.

This guy is just as lost as those little girls.

What a day...

I am finally home and can officially call it a day.

Thanks for all the well wishes for my trip. They are greatly appreciated.

Now it's back to work and...

Another special trip for us to go on at the end of the week.

My World View...

My neighbor Sue has just had her house painted.

The painters finished the job up today.

They did a very good job and the house looks really nice.

If you recall, you'll remember how changes in my environment affect me.

Well, I guess Sue remembered too, and sent me an e-mail this afternoon:

What do you think, does the ol place look better?
Do you like grey and white?

Of course, Sue was asking me after the fact you know.

The paint has been bought and is already applied to the house.

Thank goodness I knew of Sue's plans about a year ago.

I had also had several discussions about painting the house with her and her daughter Connie.

And color was always a part of those historical discussions.

But no one had bothered to tell me that they were going to paint the house this week.

So I didn't have a chance to go over and review *our* painting plans from a year ago.

Thank goodness none of those previously discussed *decisions* had been altered.

*whew*

Close call.

Today's Goals...

Each day I have a list of things to get accomplished.

Of course, throughout the day there are interruptions of various types that try to interfere with the completion of my goals.

Whether it is an uncooperative patient, or just the lack of available time, there seems to be many things that come my way that try to torpedo my list.

Torpedoes are things that keep you from your goal and ultimately...

Keeps you from that feeling of accomplishment that always makes you feel good at the end of the day.

No matter what...

We all continue on...

By putting one foot in front of the other.

Today my number one goal was to live to see tomorrow.

I'll let you know if I made it...

A Long Day...

I have had a bit of a long day.

It's time to feed the dogs and call it a night.

Have you ever been too tired to eat?

I have.

You know...

Sometimes I wish there was such a thing as "people kibble".

It would be great.

You could buy a bag of People Chow and you wouldn't have to worry about what you were going to eat for dinner.

Heck...

You wouldn't have to cook either!

And if you wanted to switch it up a bit you could always add water to your kibble and try to create some 'gravy'.

Even better...

You could add milk and eat it like cereal!

And you know, I bet it would be a lot cheaper to eat People Chow too.

Oh, how I wish I had a bowl of People Chow right about now...

Gee whiz...

I've got to get some sleep.

Happy Independence Day 2006...

I hope that everyone had a great day.

For those of you who had to work...

Know that I was thinking of you.

And I am thankful for your perserverance.

Shelly had a great day at the Edmond parade with her two German Shepherd dogs.

She has trained them to pull a wagon in tandem and has put in a lot of work and preparation.

The really neat thing about it all is that she was even allowed to be in the Edmond parade.

It's quite prestigious you know.

Congratulations Shelly for a job well done!

I am glad, and so very proud, to be an American.

Today's Mailbag...

I received a letter from Carrie today.

The kids are still at Nana and Pa's.

Sounds like they are having a great time swimming, driving four-wheelers, and fossil hunting.

She said she "missed me and loved me" and ended the letter with a *p.s.* that Parker did too.

So I called and spoke with the kids over the phone this evening.

We talked about some of their 'adventures'...

Carrie said she had to chase a heifer the other day.

I asked her where the four-wheeler was and she said that they didn't have it with them.

So she had to do things the 'old-fashioned' way, like I did when I was a kid.

Kids make great Border Collies...

But they're not as cheap to feed.

I miss the little 'boogers'...

Who's Going to Stand Up...

I've been watching a few stories with
great dismay lately.

I been following a few others about the Episcopal church and the upheaval that it is currently going through.

Have you heard any of the discourse?

How do these words strike you:

"Our Mother Jesus"

"God Our Mother"

If you like the way these phrases sound, then this post isn't for you.

I suppose that this was the next step for the church, since it has been leaning left more and more over the last decade or so.

Maybe two, or even three.

It slowly and innocently creeps in.

The conservatives within the Episcopal church are stopping just short of using the terms apostasy and schism.

Christians believe in the Trinity.

The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

How about these Presbyterian interpretations:

"Mother, Child and Womb"

"Rock, Redeemer, Friend"

hmmm... This new 'wave of thinking has affected the Mormons too.

It really doesn't matter which denomination you belong to, or which church building you show up in.

The Trinity is a fundamental doctrine of Christianity.

So who's next?

Catholics?

Methodists?

Lutherans?

Baptists?

Christian Church?

Church of God?

Church of Christ?

Assembly of God?

I know, I haven't listed everyone, and it isn't my intention to exclude anybody either!

Where is the leadership in these denominations?

Are they calling...

Are they writing letters...

Are they sending e-mails to those who are against these heretical ideas?

Are they offering their support?

Are they praying for them?

How about praying with them?

Are they doing anything?

Or do they think they are immune? Do they think that it isn't "their problem"?

Or maybe it "just isn't our place".

I think that church leaders from every walk of Christianity need to...

No...

They must stand up against heresy. They need to let their Christian brethren know that they are there for them.

That they support them, and that they are praying for them.

Isolating themselves from the problem, perhaps being secretly happy that 'that denomination' is having difficulties, is wrong.

Christ is returning for His Bride, the Body of Christ, Christians.

He isn't coming back for only your denomination.

And if you think that these issues don't affect you...

Then you're wrong.

later...

6 Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.
